After I get my NISS number, do I use this number to go to a public hospital in case I need assistance?

Your next step involves a trip to your local public health facility.

Grab your ID, proof of address in Portugal, and NISS. You’ll also need to provide proof of your status in Portugal, either a CRUE, Manifestação de Interesse, Visa, or Residence Permit.

Over there, you’ll request a Utente.

After that, every time you need medical assistance, either in an emergency hospital or a visit to a public general practitioner, you’ll simply inform your Utente number.
